November ‘11 Film Of The Month: Inglorious Basterds (Dir. Quentin Tarantino)
Tarantino is undoubtedly one of the best directors in the game, that goes without saying. However, I think he’s an even better writer. Exhibit A: Inglorious Basterds. It takes a certain level of skill (and sickness) to write a film like this. There’s that brilliant opening scene, composed almost entirely of dialogue with a punctuation of carnage at the end. The meeting at the pub, mind-blowing. The final climax, unforgettable. I’d go as far as to say it’s his best since Reservoir Dogs (yes, including Pulp Fiction).
It doesn’t hurt that Cristoph Waltz gives one of the best performances ever as Hans Landa. He flies wildly between goofy and diabolical as the “Jew-hunter,” a villain you both loathe and laugh at. What defines the performance the sudden glare he puts on once his interrogations reach a certain accusatory point. The entire demeanor of the character changes, and suddenly YOU’RE afraid too. The only word to describe it is perfect.
If you haven’t seen Inglorious Basterds, what the heck are you waiting for? Get on it.
